When and why it is necessary to replace valve cover gasket

Manufacturers do not set a specific lifetime limit for the valve cover gasket. The component is to be replaced in case of deformation or cracking. The main causes of valve cover gasket breakdown are errors during installation and elasticity loss due to aggressive influence of motor oil and high temperature. You can detect that the part became unserviceable if traces of oil leakage from under the valve cover are visible.

As well as the cylinder head gasket, the valve cover gasket is a consumable and should be replaced at every removal of the valve cover. This procedure should be performed at a service station. Before installation, it is important to degrease the gasket itself, its mounting seat, and the valve cover surface contacting with the gasket. It is necessary to use a torque wrench during cover installation and apply torque recommended by the car manufacturer. Also it is important to follow sequence of bolts tightening, which is noted in the car operation manual.

How to select valve cover gasket

The components differ by production material. Nowadays, as a rule, there are cork, rubber and silicone gaskets. The cork parts are cheaper, but notable for shortest longevity. The rubber parts are more reliable but also more expensive. The silicon valve cover gaskets are the most advanced. They are notable for excellent hermeticity and resistance to aggressive environment.

Durable and reliable valve cover gaskets are produced by well-known firms only. They are of Ridex, Nipparts, Febi Bilstein, Elring, Glaser, Reinz and other manufacturers.

The component should be selected strictly for a certain engine model. Only in this case its shape, thickness, length and width will be suitable.
