Wastegate valve: replacement and selection
When and why it is necessary to replace wastegate valve
This component has no specified operational lifetime. A new wastegate valve is installed because of old valve jamming. Quite often the whole part (if it is metal) or its elements undergo corrosion.
Loss of valve casing tightness usually leads to the valve failure. As a result, dust penetrates into the unit, which can cause jamming, and moisture – the cause of corrosion.
If an on-board computer is installed in the car, it will display a corresponding error in case of turbo pressure valve defect. Also defect can be indicated by decreasing of engine power – it stops gaining rpm while downhill acceleration to high speed, or at high car loading. All goes back to normal after engine restart. Also breakage of the valve can provoke engine detonation, during which loud pops will be heard from the operating engine.
The valve replacement algorithm depends on technical peculiarities of the car, including the engine mounting location. If valve defect was found, you need to examine all the components, which are connected to it, for instance, the vacuum pipes. Defective elements are replaced if breakdowns detected.
How to select wastegate valve
The parts can be of the pneumatic or electric type. Valves of the first type cost less and usually serve longer. However, the electric devices provide faster increasing of the boost pressure. Moreover, thanks to high force of the valve driving mechanism, the bypass valve of this type stays reliably closed even at high pressure of exhaust gases.
