Timing chain: replacement and selection
When and why a timing chain needs replacement
Average lifetime limit of this component is 200 000 – 250 000 operational kilometers. Service life of the component may be significantly shortened due to usage of poor-quality oil or its untimely replacement.
The camshaft drive chain should be replaced if it is stretched. This usually happens at high mileage due to wear of flexible joints. Tearing of the component may also occur after its lifetime end.
If the timing chain tears while the engine is working, specific loud sound is heard and the engine stops. An attempt to start it afterwards may cause its severe damaging. The fact that the component is stretched is indicated by extraneous noise under the bonnet at engine idling. However, only a service station specialist is able to precisely diagnose a defect. The component is mounted in a hard-to-reach location: for its inspection and replacement other part should be demounted. If necessary, new gears and guides are to be installed with the chain.
How to select timing chain
By the quantity of strands, there are single-strand and multiple-strand components. The first ones have relatively simple design and small weight. The second ones consist of a few rows of single-strand chains. Multiple-strand drive chains are mostly used in cars with large engine displacement.
In order to make a new timing chain serve you long, causing no troubles, it is recommended to purchase product from a trustworthy manufacturer. For example, components by VAICO and Febi Bilstein showed themselves well. During purchasing of the part you need to take into account not only car’s main characteristics (the model, brand, manufacture year) but engine specifications also (the type, power, displacement). Chains can widely differ by quantity and size of links.
