When and why it is necessary to replace intake air temperature sensor

Lifetime limit of the component is not specified by manufacturers, that is why the part is replaced by necessity. Installation of a new temperature sensor is performed in case of core thinning, loss of indicator sensitivity, and corrosion of the terminals or wiring. Sensor sensitivity loss occurs in a result of deposition on the tip, and untimely replacement of the engine air filter leads to accelerated wear of the component.

In case if the sensor is broken down, “Check Engine” indicator immediately activates on the dashboard. Moreover, a whole set of signs may indicate component defectiveness. They are: engine power loss, increased fuel consumption, unstable operation of the engine at idling, or troubles during start of a cold engine.

For replacement of the intake air temperature sensor you need to disconnect electric wiring from it (before this make sure that ignition is turned off) and carefully remove the part from the air duct.

How to select intake air temperature sensor?

By type of a sealing element the sensors are divided to parts with a seal and with a sealing ring. Moreover, the components are divided to two types by presence of a body and installation method. Thus, some sensors are equipped with their own bodies and are installed near the air filter, others, without body, have threaded part and are screwed into the intake manifold.

High-quality sensors are produced under such famous brands as Delphi, Febi Bilstein, Mapco, Facet and others. Products of these trademarks are notable for continuous lifetime, however, have quite high price. Temperature sensors of Topran and Era are considered to be also of high quality, while are sold at more affordable price.

Selecting a sensor, it is necessary to take into account its dimensions, installation method, and shape of socket for wires connection. Purchasing the component which is screwed into the intake manifold, you need also to consider parameters of a thread, particularly, its depth. Moreover, to avoid complications during installation, you need to pay attention to size of a wrench which is needed for installation, and tightening torque which needs to be followed.
