Information - Fog lights

Fog lights are lights with yellow or white glass, which give a flat and wide horizontal beam of light. But the colour of the fog lights is not so important. The main is how they distribute the luminous flux. They provide a flat, but wide horizontal beam of light, which is distributed directly over the road not to lighten the fog. But often there are cases when the fog does not apply directly to the ground, as it occurs under conditions in which the land is warmer than the air.

The fog lights that are correctly adjusted will light not so far - about ten meters. There is no need this distance to be more, as the car is moving slowly if there is fog. Instead, they shine in all directions, as is it necessary to see the margins and painted stripes in poor visibility conditions.

It is necessary the fog lamp to have a very sharp upper boundary of the beam, since no reflected light or light from the lamp should go above the horizontal plane. This is important to provide good visibility when it is foggy. Also, the light should be mounted as low as possible to the road, because between the layer of fog and road there is a gap, on which the light should fall. Fog lights are necessary not only when it is fog. Once it was advised to turn them on when driving on narrow roads with many turns in the dark. In such conditions, the speed is low, but they light sideways. Today, in some cars the main lights turn right after the steering is turned.

What you need to know about fog light replacement: lifetime limits, common defects and their signs, tips and recommendations

The fog light has no certain lifetime limit and is replaced in case of breakdown. The component can lose its serviceability in case of oxidation or thermal damage of contacts, reflector wear-out, damage of glass or housing. In case of defects one of front or rear fog lights doesn’t light up or gets dimmer.

You can assess details condition visually. If the component doesn’t function while there are no visual damages, then you should check the signal going to it and measure voltage and current rate as well. If you couldn’t find out defect cause using this method, then apply to a service station. The thing is that unqualified actions at checking fog lights can lead to damage of low and high beam light power circuit.

For replacement of the front left fog light you should demount the bumper, engine mudguard from the respective side, then unscrew fixations, disconnect the wiring harness and remove the defective component. Then install a new fog light and perform assembling in the reverse order. In order to replace the rear fog light sometimes you should also demount the bumper, unscrew light fixations, disconnect the wiring harness and after that install a new component and perform assembling. You should buy the fog light kit for replacement: using both old and new light can negatively influence lighting quality.

Our customers ask

How to remove a rear fog light?

In some cars, in order to remove a rear fog light, particularly to gain access to its fastenings, you need to remove a bumper, a left wheel arch extension and a mudguard. If you don't have appropriate experience, it is better to apply for help to specialists: they will repair the light, installing, if possible, a new glass, bulb or socket, or replacing the whole assembly.

The sequence of actions may differ according to the brand and model of the vehicle. While replacing it by yourself, use the instruction, given by the car manufacturer.

How to install LEDs into rear lights?

If halogen lamps were installed in the car as a standard, it is unacceptable to replace them with LEDs, if such possibility is not prescribed by the manufacturer. But individuality can be added into the exterior of your car, if you buy special LED strips, which can be easily installed by your own.

They are installed through a separate relay, or in parallel to factory lamp. In some cars, additional LED lights can be installed instead of decorative mouldings or reflectors in the bumper.

Why are rear fog lights not active?

If the rear fog lights of your car are not active, firstly check if the fuse didn’t burn-out. Usually, it is mounted in fuse and relaybox in the engine compartment or inside of the cabin under the dashboard. Replace the defective component with the new one, designed for that same rated voltage.

If at the lights turning-on there is no specific clicking sound, while the fuse is intact, a relay, responsible for their operation should be checked. If it is intact, but rear fog lights don’t illuminate there is a possibility that the bulb requires replacement. After you check if it is intact, make sure that there were no mistakes during components connection, using the corresponding scheme.

Check if there is no break in the electric circuit. After you finish all the actions, described above, the lights should be active. Otherwise, they need to be replaced.
