Oil pressure sensor: replacement and selection
When and why it is necessary to replace oil pressure sensor
Manufacturers do not set specific time for replacement of this component. The oil pressure sensor is replaced in case of short circuit, breaking or oxidation of contacts which connect the part to the indicator lamp or the instrument panel gauge. Moreover, a new car part is installed in case of damaging of a mounting seat which leads to loss of tightness in the place of sensor connection.
As a rule, mechanical defects of the components are the result of impacts, received, for instance, in a road accident. While ingress of moisture in the connector leads to shorting out of the sensor or contacts oxidation.
At defect of the sensor, the oil pressure indicator lamp can be frequently activating or constantly lit on the dashboard. Failures in engine operation are also possible. In cars, where the oil manometer is installed, you can find out a component defect observing the meter needle. If it swings randomly, abruptly moves to the zero position or stops at the MAX position, this indicates necessity of sensor diagnostics. If the manometer is not presupposed by the car construction, improper sensor operation can be detected at a service station only.
It is recommended to perform installation of a new component at a car maintenance station: the part can be damaged in case of absence of related work skills. In addition, the mounting location of the part can vary according to constructional specifics of the engine and the car itself. Moreover, in some cases, demounting of some accessory equipment elements can be necessary for replacement of the oil pressure sensor. It is advisable to install the sensor together with a new sealing washer: this will help to reduce the risk of oil leakage in the mounting seat area.
How to select oil pressure sensor
According to designation, there are two types of this component: alarm (electronic) and gauging (mechanical) ones. The first type devices activate if oil pressure gets below the allowable level. While the gauging components operate in the whole range of the engine lubrication system pressure values. A driver can find out the exact pressure value using such gauge.
Combined (electro-mechanical) devices with two connection contacts are installed in some car models. These car parts perform functions of both gauging and warning sensors.
