Information - Rear light

Lighting devices, including the rear lights are one of the most important parts of any modern car. In winter darkness lasts very long, that`s why a car ride without rear lights is not just inconvenient, but also truly dangerous. Apart from that, the lights, the front as well as the rear ones, are pretty fragile elements of the vehicle, which can easily be deteriorated. Their quality is quite important: a counterfeit (fake) lamp can simply damage the lighting system.

The rear lights of modern cars combine several elements of the light display and perform multiple functions at the same time. One of the main functions of the rear lights is the rear brake light display. The brake lamp lights up red when the driver presses the brake pedal. The brightness of the stop-signal rear light is higher than the brightness of the rest of its elements, which also reflects the importance of this element of the light display.

The second function of the rear lamps is marker lights. The rear marker lights indicate the vehicle at night and in conditions of poor visibility. Many modern cars are equipped with rear fog lamps, which are also designed to increase the visibility during unfavorable weather conditions. The rear lights also indicate a reversing car. Indication of reverse holds white and is used to warn other drivers and pedestrians about a vehicle in reversed motion.

The main lack is that sometimes the product are so multiple, fact that obstructs the choice. Skilled drivers do not experience such troubles very often, but beginners get sometimes confused. Our shop welcomes you; our experts will assist you with the choice of rear lights and any other automotive lighting devices, such as indicator lamps, rear position lamps, fog lights and side light indicators.

What you need to know about rear light replacement: lifetime limits, common defects and their signs, tips and recommendations

The reverse light has no limited service life and is to be replaced in case of mechanical or thermal damages of glass, body or holder, heavy contacts oxidation. The same defects can be found on the rear stop light.

You can determine necessity of diagnostics visually and by rear marker lights which don’t work properly. As a rule, the problem lies in the light itself when only one of the lamps is on during reverse drive mode turned on. Sometimes optics on both sides works well but one of the rear lights starts to light less intensely

Reversing light diagnostics lies in its visual inspection and check of electric supply. For this, measuring of voltage and current supplied to the light is performed; then readings are compared with acceptable values.

To replace the left or the right rear light you need to disconnect the negative terminal from the battery, unscrew fastening bolts of the rear light and remove it from the car body panel. Then pry the wiring connector retainer up and disconnect it, then remove the light. After that, install a new reversing light and perform assembling in the reversed order.

How to demount and disassemble rear light?

In order to demount and disassemble the rear light, for example, for replacement of a bulb of the turn indicator, marker lights, stop signs or reversing lights, be guided by the vehicle operation manual, as the actions algorithm for cars of various brands and models may have its own peculiarities. Usually, for demounting of the lights you need just to demount or unbend the luggage compartment trimming or open the lid in the lining. Then unbend clamps, remove wire plugs which comes to the light. Then, unscrew fasteners, remove the lamp housing from the guides and demount the lighting unit.

In some cars, the light is fixed not only by bolts but also by locks. In order to remove it, you need to unscrew fasteners and unbend locks, and then demount the unit, carefully catching up the edges using a flat screwdriver. Then you need to disconnect wires socket and only after this start replacing bulbs. In modern cars, various combinations of lighting units can be met. For example, the fog lights or reversing lights can be mounted into the bumper, while the right one points out reverse driving, and the left helps to identify the vehicle in poor weather conditions.

Most of all, for bulbs replacement it is enough to rotate the bulb holder counterclockwise, remove it from a mounting seat in the rear part of the light body, disconnect the bulb and install a new one into its position. But in construction of some lights the circuit board is presupposed, which replacement is necessary even if one bulb is blown. In this case, for installation of a new bulb you will need to remove fasteners of the rear lamp cover, then the circuit board, fully demount it and then install a new one. In the most modern lights the lens is non-removable, so the unit is to be replaced if damaged. For connection of a rear view camera, in case of its presence, apply specialists for help.

Which rear lights to choose: with incandescent lamps or LEDs?

It is better to select for your car the lights, presupposed by the manufacturer.

The lights with incandescent lamps are cheap, notable for construction simplicity, make no troubles during installation. But the bulbs in such lights blow out more often and consume more energy.

The LED-lights are more modern. They are notable for higher price, but are more efficient in exploitation due to low energy consumption. Theу emit brighter light and are more pleasant for eyes. They are commonly used for tuning purposes: many car owners replace the original lights with LED ones. Also you can buy the auxiliary lights kit and install them, for example, on the bumper instead of reflectors. But these works are better to perform at a service station, as for connection of tune optics you need to be well versed in automotive electrics.

How to connect rear fog lights?

In order to connect the rear fog light properly, use a scheme which you can find in the vehicle operational manual. But if you don’t have car electrician skills, contact specialists for help. In some cars two fog lights are installed by default. But in Europe, the models with a single fog light installed on the left car side are most commonly met. Most of all, on the place of the second fog light the plug or a reflector can be installed. Sometimes a second one can be mounted without connection to the circuit on the car right side, symmetrically to the fog light. In this case, connection of a second fog light is possible, but only in conditions of a service station.
