Information - Brake cylinder
The wheel cylinder brake drum is a housing made of cast iron, with two aluminum pistons mounted inside of it, provided with thick rubber cuffs. At the outer ends of the pistons are inserted steel details, which reduce their wear out. From both sides the cylinder is equipped with rubber dust protection covers. Brake fluid enters the cylinder through the connecting pipe. The wheel brake cylinder has a special pumping valve, protected by a rubber cap, designed to release air from the car`s brake system. A spring-loaded thrust ring is inserted into the cylinder`s body. It serves to adjust the gap between the brake drum mechanism and the brake pads.
When you start braking, the cylinder piston moves forced by the pressure of brake fluid, and then squeezes the brake pad. Depending on how fast the wear out of pads is processing during braking, the piston stroke increases and the moment comes when he moves the thrust ring, breaking the force of its fitting. During pads reverse bias, under the influence of the inhibitor coupling spring, the thrust ring remains in this new place, because the spring force is insufficient to move it back. So there is an automatic increase of the gap between the pad and the drum. There are two types of wheel brake cylinders: single- and two-piston.

All you need to know about brake cylinder: lifetime limits, common defects and their signs, tips and recommendations
Manufacturers do not specify operation lifetime of the wheel brake cylinder. The component is replaced when broken.
As a rule, the component is to be replaced when a piston is jammed or brake fluid is leaking. When the brake pedal is harder to push than usual, or it does not return to initial position after pressing, that suggests the former malfunction. Leakage, in turn, can be indicated by lowering of pedal resistance. Moreover, oil stains appear on the brake disc and the brake fluid level indicator turns on. Also, necessity of brake cylinder replacement is indicated by lowered braking system efficiency and skids during braking.
Diagnostics of the component is performed with special equipment at a service station. Also, after unit disassembling, specialists will perform visual inspection of its elements.
Replacement order depends on mounting location of the component. If the front brake slave cylinder is faulty, set the car on a lifting platform, immobilize rear wheels, demount the front wheel to access the broken part. Then, remove the brake caliper, clean mounting seats of the brake cylinder, disconnect the brake hose and unscrew its fasteners, holding the defective cylinder. After this remove the defective component, install a new one and assemble the unit in reverse order. Replacement of the rear brake slave cylinder requires demounting of the brake drum and shoes, but basically is performed in the similar way. Be sure to bleed the braking system after installation of a new component.
It is recommended to replace brake slave cylinders simultaneously on two wheels of one axle. A new rubber boot is installed together with the cylinder. The component is selected considering the cylinder size, which differs for the front and rear wheels.
