Brake caliper bracket: replacement and selection
When and why a brake caliper bracket needs replacement
Manufacturers do not set an exact term at the end of which the brake caliper bracket should be replaced. This component is replaced when deformed or damaged mechanically, and when mounting seats for guide sleeves are worn-out or corroded.
A common cause of bracket deformations is hitting by foreign objects during car movement. This defect can also be the result of a road accident or improper installation of the unit. And corrosive damage to the bracket occurs as a result of moisture and road dirt influence.
The main cause of guide sleeve seats wear-out is lack or poor quality of lubricant on the part. Also regular high loads to the brake system can lead to mechanical damages of the bracket.
The specific signs of defect are screeching and knocking from the wheel during driving. In some cases defect of the bracket can be indicated by vibration from the brake pedal. Moreover, damaging of the component often manifests through accelerated wear of the inner brake pad, lowering of braking efficiency and random changes of vehicle trajectory at braking.
It is recommended to perform replacement of the caliper bracket at a service station as the procedure requires usage of a lifting device and removing a wheel. If necessary, caliper guide sleeves, the caliper itself and brake pads can be replaced together with this component.
How to select a brake caliper bracket
These parts are made of aluminum, steel, cast iron and other materials. Cast iron brackets are considered to be the most durable. While parts made of aluminum help reducing the car weight, which improves its dynamic characteristics.
Longevity of the brackets depends largely on their manufacturers. High-quality brake caliper brackets are presented in the assortment of TRW, ATE, Bosch and other brands.
Selecting these components you need to take the make, model, production year of the car and its braking system type into account. Also you need to pay attention to type and thickness of the brake disc. Consider the mounting side (the left or right) and the mounting axle (the rear or front) of the car part.
