Information - Brake servo unit
The brake actuator is required in order to transmit the force, applied by the driver when pressing the brake pedal, to all the braking mechanisms of the wheels. Usually, modern cars are equipped with hydraulic brake actuators, where a special brake fluid is the main working element. The components of the hydraulic brake system drive are brake pedals, working brake cylinders, brake master cylinder, brake hoses, and vacuum brake booster. In order to slow down or stop the car, the driver must press the brake pedal, then this force is passed through a rod to the piston referring to the master brake cylinder.
Next, the piston presses the brake fluid, filled into the system. The brake fluid redirects the force to the wheel brake cylinders through fuel hoses; at the same time in the brake cylinder the pistons come forward, pressing the brake pads. Resulting from this process, the pads get pressed against the brake discs or brake drums, the wheel motion gradually slows down, and the car finally stops. Modern hydraulic brake actuators consist of two independent circuits for each pair of wheels. It should be noted that the in this case circuits do not necessarily connect the wheels of the same axis.
As for the vacuum brake booster, it is necessary in order to improve the operation of the entire brake system, and to decrease the effort applied by the driver when braking. This amplifier (booster) is in conjunction with the master cylinder. The main part of the amplifier is a space, divided into two by a rubber diaphragm. Because of the pressure drop and sufficient diaphragm area, the effort while pressing the pedal may be significantly reduced. The broken item can be easily replaced by the car owner himself, or in a garage. And it will be a lot more profitable to order in our online store the necessary parts, such as bumpers, body sides, or the expansion valves.
What you need to know about vacuum brake booster replacement: lifetime limits, common defects and their signs, tips and recommendations
The vacuum brake booster has no specified lifetime limit. Defects which require vacuum brake booster replacement are the following: depressurization of chambers and damage of diaphragm integrity.
If the vacuum brake booster is out of order, resistance of the brake pedal increases. Also, there can be engine failures at idle which disappear at brake pedal pressing.
You can find out component defect on your own. For this you need to press the brake pedal several times, leave it in the fixed position in the middle of its travel, and then start the engine. If pedal resistance doesn’t get lower, the vacuum brake booster is out of order.
Component replacement is performed at a service station, because brake system maintenance requires high professional skills. You need to disconnect vacuum brake booster push rod from the brake pedal, then demount the master brake cylinder. Then disconnect the vacuum hose from the check valve, remove the broken down vacuum brake booster and install a new component.
If damages of the vacuum piping were found during works performing, it should be replaced together with the seal of the check valve of the vacuum brake booster.
