Information - Brake shoe kits
This spare part is a component of the brake system. Moreover, it is the main working part. The main function of the brake shoe is to create a braking acceleration due to the interaction with the surface of the brake disc and transformation of the pressing force when braking. By the way, this part is used not only in cars, but also motorcycles, bicycles and trains. Scheme of the brake shoe operating is not very complicated. When braking, the pressure on the pedal is transmitted to the brake shoes. Shoes do not let the brake disc to rotate. At this moment because of the friction brake disc gradually slows down its rotation and wheel rotation speed reduces. Thus the car stops. It is a very important component of the brake system and of the car. Therefore, it is necessary to pay a great attention to the material it is made of.
In the production of the shoes friction materials there are used more than 300 components, including tar, mineral and organic fibres, synthetic rubber, fillings and various modifiers. Many factors that affect the long-lasting trouble-free operation of brake shoes depend on these materials. It is also worth noting that as a rule, the front brake shoes wear out faster than the rear, because when braking they suffer the main load. Today, car parts makers use special devices that warn that the brake shoe should be replaced. There are two types of such devices – mechanical and electronic.
When front or rear brake shoe wears, it begins specifically to creak. This means that there is installed a mechanical device. As for the electronic device, brake shoe wear is displayed on the dashboard of the car. A special indicator lights up on it. Still, if only one shoe is worn, it is necessary to replace all the shoes at once. On the contrary, the new shoe and the shoe that wasn’t replaced can brake wheels in different ways that will affect the controllability of the vehicle. You can order all necessary spare parts, including brake shoes, air filter or shock absorber in our online store.
What do you need to know about drum brake shoes: replacement intervals, common defects and their signs, tips and recommendations
Lifetime limit of drum brake shoes is 30 000 – 40 000 operational kilometers on the average. Lifetime of these components depends on operation conditions. Particularly, it is reduced by frequent sharp brakings, aggressive driving style, improper adjustment of the parking brake cable and neglecting to release the parking brake before putting the car into drive.
The most common cause for drum brake shoes replacement is their wear-out. Significant soiling may also cause the replacement. Defects of brake shoes may also be caused by oil that got to friction lining surface. However, if lubricant traces are found on the shoes, their replacement will be unreasonable if the leakage is not detected and removed.
Signal from the brake shoes wear sensor, unusual sounds at braking, and changed brake pedal resistance – all this indicates the unserviceability of the drum brake shoes. A braking path, longer than usual, also suggests that brake shoes need checking. If the vehicle skids during braking, it may also be the sign of faulty components.
A defect of drum brake shoes can be detected by yourself after visual inspection. Mechanical damages and deformation indicate the necessity of replacement. It is also important to measure the friction lining thickness: it shouldn’t be less than 2 mm for most vehicles. You will be able to determine exact causes of braking system malfunctions by visiting a service station for diagnostics.
In order to replace the drum brake shoes, release the parking brake, install wheel chocks under the wheels, lift the car with a jack and demount the wheel to access the drum. After that, remove brake drum mounting screws and detach the drum. Then, disconnect all arms and springs of the braking mechanism and the parking brake cable, disconnect the shoes from the pins and demount them. Then, install new components and assemble the unit in reverse order.
Remember, that it is necessary to replace brake shoes in pairs (on both sides of an axle). That is why manufacturers offer drum brake shoe kits.
