Final drive serves to connect the driving axle to the engine. This connection is necessary to transmit torque from the engine to the wheels. You should take into account the difference between the east-west and longitudinal mounting of the motor. In case of the east-west mounting the main drive consists of cylindrical gears. When it is a longitudinal mounting, it is made of a drive conical gear. In addition, worm gear and hypoid final drive is used. Ride comfort is possible due to the oblique toothed gear. In addition to those listed above, sometimes the final drive is used for axial displacement.
In order to have enough torque for all driving wheels, it is necessary to ensure increase of torque in the final drive. To do this, change the gear ratio. The number of revolutions per time unit is reduced, while the torque is increased. In this case a constant ratio is applied, which depends on the type of vehicle and in most cases is within 1: 2.5 to 1: 4. The total ratio of the car with the final drive is calculated on the basis of the final drive ratio and gearbox ratio. Differential drive compensates the difference of the number of revolutions of wheels moving along a curve.
If the final drive fails, the car is no longer able to ride because there is no power transfer. The cause of the failure may be in the joint disk / Hardy Spicer joint, connecting rod, swing bearing, wheel bearings, cardan shaft, primary shaft, guide wishbone, independent suspension joint, axle neck, stabilizer, axle suspension or track rod. Often tapping sounds or vibrations indicate final drive damage.
In the event of such problems immediately contact the service centre. If you have any doubts, it is necessary to drive to the car repair shop. It is not difficult to replace the final drive, but it must be done only by professionals.
