Information - Shock absorbers
Damper is a mechanism that converts mechanical energy into heat. In modern vehicles, it refers to a device that allows you to soften seating or embarkation, stopping, or any other unfortunate situations, which can occure to the vehicle. And it secures first of all not so much the car as the driver and passengers.
The damper consists of springs, gas, torsion bars, liquids, and, of course, of rubber parts. It works the following way: the spring, which takes up the hit of a collision while seating or stopping, turns the resulting energy into heat, which is then used to heat the oil. Moreover, the level of viscosity of the oil, which the driver fills in the damper, must affect it`s performance, given the wide range of possible temperatures in the working vehicle.
All dampers can be divided into hydraulic, gas, and blow. This division is conditional, because in all these cases the "central" node - the valve essentially remains unchanged. The main valve moves inside the central cylinder. In the hydraulic and blow dampers, there is also an outer cylinder, where the oil is moved through the system of the lower valve. The gas damper does not have an outer cylinder.
If you need to replace the camshaft, it is not necessary to spend time for shopping or cervice centers. In this case you will not only loose time, but also significantly overpay for the necessary part. It is better to go to our online store. We offer a large selection of camshafts for any car brand. Order the necessary part at a very affordable price. And we will make sure that the delivery will be made in a short time. Apart from camshaft, you can also buy other car parts such as bearing damper, spark plugs or flange.
What you need to know about shock absorber replacement: lifetime limits, common defects and their signs, tips and recommendations
Suspension shock absorbers serve averagely for 100 000 – 120 000 operational kilometers. The component can get out of order because of mount bushes and rod seal wear-out, corrosion of fixations and spring mount of the shock absorber, body deformation and valve breakdown.
You can notice defect of the front or rear shock absorbers by stains of working fluid leakage, worsening road-holding ability and drivability of vehicle. You can also notice delayed response to steering wheel turning on uneven road sections. Uneven tyres wear-out also points at shock absorber struts defectiveness.
Diagnostics at a service station allows to precisely estimate condition of the shock absorber strut. It can be performed on the vibration or test stand. In the first case the car is set on the stand area and then readings of axial oscillation are taken, after that they are compared with manufacturer’s specifications. Check of damping force is performed on the test stand, which takes demounting of the front or rear shock absorber according to location of the defective component. In order to check the mounts and the shock strut and other unit elements you need to set the car on the lifting platform and inspect the components.
Shock absorbers replacement is performed only at a service station. The car needs to be lifted and the bolts fastening the front shock absorber strut to the steering knuckle unscrewed. Then you should disconnect the braking system hose from the strut, unscrew the fixation of the upper front shock mount and remove the strut. A new unit is installed as an assembly; details are mounted in the reverse order. The rear shock absorber strut is replaced by a similar principle. If the struts are dismountable, then only replacement of the shock absorber cartridges is possible. It is important to remember that both components on one axle are to be replaced in case of breakdown of one shock absorber.
How to replace shock absorber dust boot on your own?
It is not recommended to replace the shock absorber dust boot on your own. During works performing you will need to demount and disassemble the shock strut. Demounting of the unit requires the use of special equipment – a remover tool for springs compression. It is dangerous to remove a spring without it, as its pushing force is very high. When selecting dust boots for replacement be guided by the vehicle technical documentation. Choose only those components, which are precisely equal to original equipment by parameters. Take into account that the front and rear shock absorber dust boots may vary by sizes on the same car.
Can shock absorber dust boots knock?
The shock absorber dust boots can not knock. But herewith most often suspension knocks are perceived by drivers as knocking of the dust boots. That is why, if you hear strange sounds in parts mounting location during driving, you should contact specialists for diagnostics performing.
As for the dust boots, their defects – cracks and tears on their surface – can be easily noticed visually. Also, during diagnostics, traces of oil leakage can be found on the dust boot surface. In this case you will need to replace the shock strut.
How to examine shock absorber bump stop?
To inspect the shock absorber bump stop you should visually examine it. Cracks, tears, deformation of improper fixation of the parts point at necessity to perform replacement of the component. Defective parts should be replaced as soon as possible: otherwise risk of shock strut damaging increases. It is recommended to check condition of the dust boots and bump stops during each technical inspection.
