Arm bushes: selection and replacement
When and why it is necessary to replace arm bushes
On the average the arm bushes are designated for 100,000 kilometers of mileage. Premature replacement of the components is usually caused by tearing of a rubber element, as a result of which free play appears in the bush. Moreover, a new part will be required if the rubber part of an old one is deformed or lost its elasticity.
Apart from being in use for a long time, mechanical damages of the arm bush can be caused by operation of the car on roads with poor-quality surface. Deformation of the part is mostly caused by its improper operation.
You can detect that the components require replacement when roadholding ability of the car got worse at maneuvers, screeching is heard from the suspension during driving on a rough road. Moreover, defects of the bushes are often pointed out by uneven wear-out of tyres treads and inability to perform the wheel alignment.
The parts should be replaced in a set, on all the wheels. It is recommended to perform this at a service station, as a lifting device is needed for demounting of the arms. Note the fact that after installation of new components, their fastening should be performed only when the car stands on the ground. In this case the suspension will take working position and the components won’t be deformed. Wheels alignment will be necessary to be done after installation of the arm bushes.
How to select arm bushes
Rubber or polyurethane are used for production of the elastic part of the component. Rubber bushes provide smooth car ride and are affordable by price. While the polyurethane parts improve vehicle steerability due to higher stiffness, and serve longer. At the same time they cost more.
Longevity of the arm bushes greatly depends on the company producing them. Nowadays, manufacturers of high-quality spare parts are Febi Bilstein, Vaico, JP Group, Topran and others.During purchasing of the bushes take into account that they are divided into parts for upper and lower arms. Also offered are individual components for installation into the front or rear axle. Exact parameters of the parts are indicated by the car manufacturer. If they are unknown, you should select the bushes by inner and outer diameters and length. Take into account that the quantity of parts installed in the independent suspension arm can vary according to the car model.
Where are arm bushes located? How to perform their replacement?
The arm bushes are located in the front and rear parts of the car under its bottom. They serve for connection of the suspension arms to each other, as well as to the hub, steering knuckle, car body, subframe and other parts. Usually, in the front suspension, rubber-metal joints are used, which consist of two metal sleeves and a rubber insert between them. In the rear suspension, most of all, special ball joints are used, they are also called floating bushes. Exact mounting location of the components in the car depends on the suspension construction. It can be specified in car technical documentation.
Replacement of the parts should be performed at a service station. A special remover tool will be required for the components pressing out and in. Moreover, replacement process itself may become quite laborious: while in case of removal of the lower arm bush there is no necessity to disconnect the arm itself from the car; then for replacement of the upper arm joint, demounting of the whole unit assembly is necessary.
How to select arm bushes? Bushes of what firms are better to install?
In order to properly select the arm bushes, be guided not by the sizes of the parts, but by their compatibility with the exact car model. It is very important that the inner and outer diameters of the components conform with parameters of the original parts. Take into account that sizes of the bushes for the front and rear arms on the same car may differ. Also you shouldn’t install the floating bushes instead of regular rubber-metal ones, and the other way round, if such possibility is not presupposed by the vehicle manufacturer.
It is better to install the bushes of the following firms in the car: A.B.S., Febi Bilstein, Delphi, Fortune Line, Mapco, Metzger, Meyle, Moog, NK, Ruville, Sidem, Swag, Topran, Triscan, TRW, Vaico and other manufacturers. The components of these brands are notable for high quality and serve for long.
How to examine arm bushes?
In order to examine the arm bushes, set the car onto a lifting platform or lift the needed axle with the help of a jack. The algorithm of examining depends on part mounting location. For example, in order to check the bushes of the front wishbones, you need to disconnect the ball joints and estimate reliability of the unit fastening. When rocked vertically, the arm should return to initial position, and the bush itself should remain securely sitting in its housing. Defectiveness of the bushes can also be found during visual inspection. If there are cracks, chips and tears on its surface, its should be replaced.
Breakdown of the components is indicated by the following signs:
- uneven tyres wear-out;
- deviation of the car from straight;
- wheels misalignment;
- delayed response of the car to steering commands;
- foreign sounds from the front or rear arms.
