Automatic gearbox oil: replacement and selection

When and why it is necessary to replace automatic gearbox oil

Replacement of automatic gearbox oil should be performed every 60 000 – 70 000 kilometers of mileage. Automatic gearbox oil is replaced prematurely in case if it loses its qualities. Moreover, new automatic gearbox oil can be needed at finishing of repair works on gearbox parts, for example, after leakage repair.

Loss of automatic gearbox oil qualities is conditioned by its soiling with abrasive material. Wear of automatic gearbox elements leads to it. If leakage is found, it means that seals and gaskets replacement is required. After such repair working liquid is filled or replaced if necessary.

Slipping of automatic gearbox and noise at gear shifting can point at oil leakage and as a result its low level. If oil lost its qualities during exploitation then, apart from the signs, noted above, changing of its colour will point at it. It is noticeable at check of the automatic gearbox oil level with the help of the oil dipstick (its location place is specified in the car manual).

Removal of useless automatic gearbox oil should be performed at a service station with the help of special equipment. Specialists will replace automatic gearbox oil and install a new filter and an oil pan gasket. Remember, that during replacement mixing of different types fluids is prohibited: it can lead to fast wear-out of gearbox details.

How to select automatic gearbox oil

Automatic gearbox oils can be mineral, synthetic and semi-synthetic. The main advantage of mineral oils is nice greasing quality. Synthetic fluids have higher viscosity index and, as a result, their working temperature range is wider. Semi-synthetic fluids have anti-oxidation qualities, they can withstand low temperature but they differ by more affordable price in comparison with synthetic ones.

There are three main oil types according to SAE viscosity classification: summer, winter, all-seasons. Oils also differ by the type and quantity of additives. The main of them are anti-friction, anti-corrosion, dispersants, viscosity optimizers and others.

A wide range of gearbox fluids is offered by such manufacturers as Febi Bilstein, Ravenol, Mobil, Swag, Vaico, Castrol. Automatic gearbox oil is selected according to the car brand and model and also taking into account conditions of car exploitation and fluid specification. Appropriate oil type is specified in the car manual and sometimes on the automatic gearbox dipstick.
