Exhaust system fasteners and joints: replacement and selection
When and why exhaust system fasteners and joints need replacement
These components have no specified lifetime expectancy. Sealing rings, in particular, are replaced when they are burnt through or corroded, whereas flange gaskets and exhaust mounts – if cracks and deformations appear. Also mechanical damages of the fastening elements are possible. Usually, the silencer bracket may tear off.
Corrosion of metal components occurs due to constant influence of moisture. Moreover, the exhaust system elements often break down if the car is used on rough roads. Burning-out of some parts is caused by their mounting location and constant impact of high temperature.
Defect signs depend on the fact, which exact part is faulty. For example, burning of the sealing ring should be suspected if unusual sound from the exhaust system appears during engine operation. Presence of exhaust gases smell in the cabin is possible when the flange gasket is damaged. If the silencer mounts are torn off, so as a result of poor fixation interrupted knocking can be heard from the car bottom.
If during replacement of the exhaust system fasteners and joints bolts are used, then opt for those with anti-corrosion coating. This will extend the lifetime of the whole system and simplify the repairs. You should take into account that new fasteners should be installed each time any exhaust system element is replaced.
How to select exhaust system fasteners and joints
Various materials are used for manufacturing of these spare parts. For example, exhaust mounts, can be made of polyurethane or rubber. Polyurethane withstands influence of high temperature and moisture especially well. Rubber parts are inferior by these characteristics, but usually cost less. Typically, flanges are made of steel and aluminum. Sealing rings can be steel, asbestos-metal or graphite. Components made of metal are more thermoresistant, while the graphite ones – more budget-friendly.
In order to ensure faultless operation of the exhaust system, give preference to fastening elements from manufacturers with high reputation. For example, such brands as HJS, BOSAL, Febi Bilstein are trustworthy.
When buying new fasteners and joints it is necessary to take into account your vehicle characteristics. Particularly, the brand, model, manufacturing year and the body type are important. Buying flanges and brackets you need to make sure that their parameters comply with diameter of the exhaust pipe installed in your car.
