There are two processes while gas exhausting – propulsion of gas through the pipes and distribution of the sound in gaseous environment. Both processes affect the coefficient of the cylinders' filling. Resistance to gas flow reduces the capacity and quality of the blow-off. The shorter the tube and greater its diameter is, the less resistance to the flow.
The existence in the exhaust system of a resonator (a reflector, located at a certain distance from the exhaust valve) considerably improves the cylinders` blow-off, and thus increases the engine`s torque. This phenomenon is necessary in order to modify the torque curve. If you need power in high-rpm places, the resonator is set on a decreasing section after maximum of rotations, expending the torque area. If you need to increase the torque in low-rpm areas, the resonator is set on the increasing to maximum section.
The end silencer is necessary to reduce noise. It is located as far as possible from the exhaust valves in order to decrease its influence on the resonance quality. The end silencer damps exhaust sounds with the least resistance to the gas flow. Significant tangible gain in power is obtained by the right selection and proper installation of all components of the exhaust system, including the end silencer. To summarize: one-piece exhaust manifold with equal length tubes, resonator (pre-silencer), and, of course, end silencer. Properly calculated diameter of the exhaust pipes also adds additional power.
