Information - Ignition system
Ignition system is needed to ignite the fuel-air mixture in the cylinder. In a diesel engine auto-ignition is induced, while in a gasoline engine spark plugs generate a spark. In modern cars ignition systems are fully electronic. The most common are program controlled ignition or thyristor ignition systems. In old cars often ignition batteries are used. Magneto-system can be met only in old vehicles.
A proper adjustment of the ignition system is of great importance for the normal functioning of the engine. When the ignition goes on too early or too late, the fuel-air mixture is burned inefficiently. This increases fuel consumption and excessively feeds the engine. In extreme cases improperly regulated ignition system may even cause engine failure. If the engine produces sound or works intermittently, immediately contact the service centre. By means of chip-tuning engine performance can be improved by correcting the ignition system. However, the car owner should know that the chip-tuning of the engine will shorten its operation time and increase fuel consumption.
If the ignition system is faulty, it is expressed in reduced efficiency of the engine or its failure. Such parts as, for example, spark plugs, high tension wire, inductive sensor, Hall sensor or electronic control unit can fail. Modern ignition system with a control unit can be repaired only in the service station. When speaking about older cars, an experienced car owner can repair or replace the ignition system. However, it should be done careful, as the ignition system operates at high voltage and inattention can have serious consequences. So it is better the amateurs to refuse to repair it and contact a service centre.
