Information - Distributor rotor
Cars, manufactured before 1997, were equipped with such devices like distributor rotor and cover. Newer models were provided with breakerless ignition system. Apart from that, the ignition coil was submitted to some changes too. If up to 2001 cars were equipped with high-voltage wires, in newer models the ignition coil is placed directly on the spark plugs.
If you have doubts regarding the proper functioning of your distributor rotor, this fact can be easily checked. If there is a spark between the distributor and the high-voltage wire when you disconnect it, then the cylinder must be faulty. When the spark jumps from the cap to the tip of the high-voltage wire, then the problem is in the ignition system. In most cases, this points to the fact that the problem is in the distributor rotor and cap.
Considering this fact, it should also be mentioned that the reason for the missing spark in the cylinder at a maximum current can be caused by a faulty ignition coil or by burned-out points in the point ignition system. Respectively, in the cylinder that requires low voltage there will be ignition, but in the parts that increase it - no. Simply put, when the spark plug is dirty, the current that passes through it, is very low, and the plug will not issue a spark. If the plug is in the satisfying condition, it will generate a spark, because a dirty plug requires higher voltage in order to break through the spark gap.
In any case, if testing functionality or even replacing parts, the car owner should appeal to a repair shop or garage, which has all the necessary equipment to detect such malfunctions. However, if you need to buy new spare parts at a great price, go to our online store where you will find everything a vehicle needs: generators, shock-absorber, spark plugs and more!
What you need to know about ignition distributor replacement: lifetime limits, common defects and their signs, tips and recommendations
Operational lifetime of the ignition distributor is about 100 000 – 120 000 kilometers of mileage. Early replacement of the component will be necessary in case of deformation or jamming of its shaft. As a rule, replacement of the whole unit is performed at breakdown of the optical sensor. Moreover, a new component may be required at destruction of the bearing or violation of vacuum advance unit body hermeticity.
The specific signs of ignition distributor defects are: unstable engine operation at idling, lowering of engine power at car acceleration, increased fuel consumption, jerks of the car during driving, knocking in working engine. In some cases the car may fail to start.
Diagnostics of the ignition distributor should be performed at a service station. The thing is, that for inspection the component should be removed, and the high-voltage cables from it – removed in advance. Performance of this procedure without corresponding knowledge may be dangerous. Diagnostics includes visual inspection of condition of the cap, ignition rotor, contacts and other elements.
Replacement of the ignition distributor should be also entrusted to specialists of a car service station. It is a laborious process, during which a professional will disconnect high-voltage cables from the part. After this, by rotating the crankshaft, the proper position of rotor arm is set, and the notches are marked on the cylinder head for proper installation of the part. Then specialists will remove fastening elements and demount the component. Installation of a new part is performed in the reverse order. If necessary, a sealing ring is replaced together with the ignition distributor.
