Information - Outside Mirror & Wing Mirror Glass

If you have a fairly good overview of not only the road, but also of the whole car, then you should be able to protect yourself from all sorts of trouble, which often lead to accidents. Particular attention should be paid to the rear view that, in fact, should be wide enough.

In order to properly adjust the side mirrors, you need to get comfortable in the driver's seat. Then tilt your head slightly to the left and start to adjust the mirror so that you could properly see the end of the rear bumper on the left side. The other mirror should be set the same way. This allows you to manage the control while driving. If you follow the mirror set rules, you will have the most appropriate view. The "dead zone" point practically disappears. This way you can watch what is happening behind your back.

Particular attention should be paid to the setting of rear view mirrors, because it is used by the driver to see the road. Therefore, any motorist should know how to set up this mirror. If the setting is correct, then the view in the adjusted mirror must coincide with the center of the rear window.

Another important moment: mirrors set up must be carried out only when the vehicle is in hold position (immobile). Even when your mirror turned to the side while driving, do not try to set it up immediately, it will distract you from driving. Stop the car and do the necessary adjustments. If you need to buy a new mirror for your car, welcome to our online store. We will deliver the ordered spare part in a short time and at an advantageous price. You can also order suspensions, fuel tanks or brake drums.

All you should know about rear view mirror replacement: lifetime limits, common defects and their signs, tips and recommendations

Rear view mirrors have no strict lifetime limit, regardless to their optical element type, which can be flat, spherical or aspherical. The components are to be replaced at mechanical damages of the glass or plastic housing, worsening of reflective characteristics or detachment of the amalgam.

The electric drive also breaks down, as well as fasteners and cables, which are fixing position of the side or cabin rear view mirror. As a rule, the latter is less apt to damage of the housing and glass. Mostly, replacement is performed when position of the cabin rear view mirror can not be adjusted due to breakage of the fasteners.

The main signs, indicating that the side rear view mirror requires replacement, are shears, cracks, dark spots and traces of rust on the mirror element, melting of the component housing. In addition, the side rear view mirror is to be replaced, if automatic turning, dimming do not work, and also, at presence of heating function, icing of the glass takes place in cold season.

At first diagnostics of the component lies in its thorough visual inspection for external damages. It is recommended to perform check of the electric drive of the side mirrors at a service station, as the procedure requires special equipment and skills.

Replacement algorithm of the component depends on its mounting location and construction. If the cabin, particularly, the panoramic rear view mirror is mounted to the windshield with the help of special suction cups; it should be removed and a new one installed. In case if the component is mounted to the ceiling with the help of bolts or screws, the procedure gets more complicated. Commonly, removal of the ceiling trimming and dismantling of the car roof may be necessary for unscrewing the fasteners. In order to replace the side view mirror, you need to remove the front door trimming and disconnect the power supply wires. After that you need to unscrew the fasteners of a defective component, remove it and install a new one.

Removing side mirrors

To remove a side mirror assembly, perform the following actions:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
  2. Remove the trim panel by pressing out lockpins with a flat-head screwdriver. If dealing with a mechanical-drive mirror, you will first need to remove the locking brace.
  3. Disconnect the electrical cables leading to the mirror.
  4. Screw off the bolts holding the component; if necessary, screw off the drive mechanism fastener as well.
  5. Demount the mirror. The whole procedure must be done with utmost care so as not to damage the fragile glass of the mirror.

The sequence of the actions when replacing the mirror may differ slightly depending on car model and manufacturer. You will find more information in your car manual.

Choosing the right side view mirror

When choosing side view mirrors, keep in mind the following characteristics:

  • Control mechanism structure. Hinge, lever, or cable mechanisms are simple and reliable constructions; however, they are not easy to adjust while driving. Electric drive allows for remote adjustment, but a bigger number of components means the mirror would break down more often.
  • Additional equipment. Side view mirrors can have indicator repeaters, LED illumination, rearview cameras, etc. embedded for better visibility.
  • Mirror type. Flat mirrors render objects the most realistically, but cover a smaller area. Spherical and aspherical mirrors distort distances and object sizes, but reduce blind zones.

Disassembling exterior mirrors

Sometimes, there is no need to remove an exterior rear view mirror in order to replace faulty LEDs, sensors or damaged glass. It can be taken apart while still on the car. The following actions would need to be performed:

  1. Secure the mirror in the farthest position.
  2. Using a plastic wedge, press out the lock pins holding the mirrors inside the housing. Make sure you don't damage the mirror surface.
  3. If the external mirrors are heated electrically, remove the connectors carefully before removing the mirror.
