Information - Boot gas struts
The inner trunk is a compartment of a passenger car or bus cabin, which is intended to contain and transport of luggage. In a passenger car the trunk is structurally separated from the salon, and you can enter it through a separate door, which is located at the back end of the body. Of all the car accessories you can destinguish the device, which is located on the roof of the car, taking a completely separate niche. Drivers call it auto trunk. Indeed, it is often very necessary. Because the car has long ceased to be merely a piece of luxury. First of all - it is a mean of transportation, as well as the most comfortable way to transport luggage.
If you have to carry a little baggage quite often, the extra car trunk can be very nacessary. And such a need may occure unexpectedly, so it's best to think in advance about equiping the car with such an accessory. A large selection of luggage systems, easy to install and of a nice appearance makes this accessorie not just a necessary element of your car, but also anattractive part of it.
The auto trunk consists of two arcs, which are fastened by special hooks on the doorway directly across the car. The arcs can be rectangular or aerodynamic. And the difference between them is that the rectangular arc makes noise while driving, the aerodynamic arc on the contrary, does not make noise at all. Auto box and bike or skis mount - this is an additional equipment to the trunk. It is already installed on it separately. Thinking about buying a trunk? Order this accessory in our online store. And do not doubt that we will deliver it to you in a short time, to any convenient place. In addition to the luggage you can also buy bumpers, wheel hubs or brake pads.
What is necessary to know about trunk lid gas strut replacement: lifetime limits, common defects and their signs, tips and recommendations
The trunk lid gas strut has no specific lifetime limit. Necessity of gas strut replacement can be caused by destruction of a seal. Less often it occurs due to deformation of the body or the rod. The main sign of gas strut defect – the lid doesn’t hold in the upper position.
Component defect can be diagnosed by trunk lid travel. At faultless gas struts operation it lowers from the upper positions with the help of a soft pushing, and lifts automatically. If some of the processes go on differently, the component should be replaced. Also, the defective component can be specified during visual inspection: for example, component deformation or depressurization.
For replacement of the trunk lid gas struts, firstly you need to fixate the lid in the upper position with the help of some materials at hand, like a wooden bar. Also you can use help of workmate. Then you should remove the top fastener, which fixes the joint of an old part. You can use a flat screwdriver to do it. The lower part of the gas strut can be detached the same way. Then new components should be installed. It is recommended to perform gas strut replacement by pair, even if only one strut is broken. Installation of new components is performed in the reverse order: firstly, the lower parts of the components, then – the upper ones.
How to replace a gas shock absorber of a trunk lid/rear door?
To replace a gas shock absorber of a trunk lid/rear door you need to follow these steps:
- Lift the trunk lid/rear door and place props.
- Gain access to mounting location of the shock absorber. Possibly, side covering will require demounting.
- Next actions depend on mounting type of the component. Typically, you need to unbend fastening with the help of a flat screwdriver and carefully remove ball pin from the component mounting socket. In case if the ball pin of the ball joint is fastened directly to the body and have no clamp, it should be removed with the help of a hex box wrench. If the gas shock absorber is not fastened with a joint, simply unscrew the bolt, retaining it."
- New gas shock absorbers should be pumped before installation. To do so, you need to set the component in its working position, contract it to the stop for 5-6 seconds, and then carefully release the rod and let it straighten. This procedure should be repeated 15-20 times. Learn from tutorial videos more information about how proper pumping of gas shock absorbers looks like.
How is the gas shock absorber of the luggage compartment constructed?
The gas shock absorber of the luggage compartment is constructed this way: in the part body, which is a sealed cylinder, the rod with the piston move. A relief valve that equals the pressure of both cavities is included in the piston construction. The cylinder is filled with gas under high pressure, which is in compressed condition when the trunk lid is closed. On the side of piston fastening there is a special chamber; it is filled with oil and separated with the guiding bush from the gas filled chamber. During opening the trunk lid, the absorber rod is pulled out under the influence of compressed gas, and, getting through some distance, compresses the oil, which stops the piston in its upper position. At closing the lid, oil flows back, providing smoothness of its moving.
Can the gas shock absorber of the luggage compartment be repaired?
It is impossible to repair the gas shock absorber of the luggage compartment: they are filled at manufacturing and in case, if gas pressure or body hermeticity failed, they are to be replaced. If you noticed that the trunk lid stops too sharp or doesn’t lock in the opened position, while there are leakages or rusting on the components surfaces – installation of new gas shock absorbers is required. It is recommended to replace gas shock absorbers of the luggage compartment by pairs.
