Information - Engine radiator
The radiator is necessary in order to cool the heated cooling fluid with air flows. Along with the main radiator, in the system can be installed an oil cooler and an EGR cooler (Exhaust Gas Recirculation). The oil cooler is responsible for cooling the oil in the lubricating system, the EGR cooler – for cooling the exhaust gases. This way is achieved a decline of combustion temperature of the air-fuel mixture and formation of nitrogen oxide. An additional circulation pump helps the EGR radiator.
Regarding the cooling system, the function of the radiator in the cooling of the water, which flows from the engine`s water jacket into the radiator. This element consists of a top and bottom tanks, core, and holding elements (fasteners). The core and the tanks are made from brass in order to ensure good heat conductivity. In the radiator`s core there are thin transverse plates, penetrated by flat vertical tube. The water that passes through the core forms a large number of jets, which helps to better cool the water because of the increased contact area with the tubes walls.
The top and bottom tanks are connected to the engine`s cooling jacket through pipes. The lower tank is provided with drain tap in order to drain the radiator. To do this, in the engine water jacket area there is a tap screwed into the bottom of the unit. Water is poured into the cooling system through the top tank filler pipe, which closes with a special cap. The liquid cooling system also provides dual control of the thermal mode in the engine – a blind and a thermostat. No matter what kind of spare part you need, radiator, expansion tank or oil level indicator, you will find all the necessary items in our online store at a great price. Apart from that, you will not have to wait for your order for a very long time; you will get them within a few days.
What you need to know about a cooling radiator replacement: lifetime limits, common defects and their signs, tips and recommendations
There’s no certain lifetime limit for a cooling radiator. This car part is inspected at scheduled maintenance because this is the main car radiator. The component mostly requires replacement in case of its clogging as well when its housing loses hermeticity due to mechanical damage.
Cooling fluid leakage can indicate problems with a car radiator. This is accompanied by specific antifreeze smell under the bonnet or in the passenger compartment. Moreover, corresponding dashboard indicators can show working fluid leakage or overheating that lead to engine overheating.
In order to check the cooling system radiator you need to visit a service station. Specialists will demount several other components to gain access to this part. The radiator will be inspected for damages and coolant stains.
It is recommended to replace the engine radiator at a service station because slipshod installation of this component can damage other car parts. Moreover, you’ll need to drain and refill the system with coolant which requires special skills.
Why can the lower radiator pipe be cold?
The lower radiator pipe may be cold due to various reasons, particularly the following:
- radiator soiling;
- thermostat jamming;
- ingress of air into the system;
- malfunction of the water pump.
In order to define a defect cause, apply for help to specialists. Remember: the radiator lower pipe not always should be hot. At low environmental temperature, when the engine is not warmed up and cooling liquid circulates through the small circle, it will stay cold. It is normal.
How can air ingress into the cooling system?
Usually, air ingresses into the cooling system by many reasons. One of them – failure of the expansion tank cap. If its thread is worn, air intake occurs. It accumulates in the expansion tank or other elements of the cooling system, and at the engine rpm increase, this air may force out the coolant.If the cap valve, designed for excessive pressure blow, is jammed, hoses, pipes and the radiator will break down due to time. This will lead to appearance of airlocks. According to their location, cooling system or accessory units and assemblies, such as heating radiator, may work improperly.
Also poor-quality priming of the cooling system after antifreeze refill may also cause an appearance of airlocks. Sometimes exhaust gases ingress into the cooling system. Usually it is caused by crack in the cylinder head or its gasket wear-out.
What functions do radiators perform? How do they work?
According to designation, automotive radiators can perform various functions. The engine radiator maintains the temperature optimal for its operation and it is very important element of the cooling system. It is mounted in the front part of vehicle and is protected from mechanical damages with the special grill.
Liquid inside of the radiator moves through pipes of different cross-section, plates or corrugated band, speeding up its cooling, are molded to it. Fans, blowing to the radiator with cold air, and diffusers which regulate air flow direction are used for higher efficiency of heat-exchange processes. Excessive pressure release is performed by the radiator cap, equipped with inlet and drain valves.
Heating radiators serve for cabin heating. They are constructed in the same way, but in their construction there are swirlers in order to improve heat-exchange. The oil radiator, usually is used as auxiliary, serve for oil cooling in the lubrication system of the engine, transmission, liquid in the steering control, and also sometimes for oil in the reductor.
