Refrigerant pressure sensor: replacement and selection
When and why it is necessary to replace refrigerant pressure sensor
This component has no specified lifetime limit. Necessity of sensor replacement occurs when, for example, its body integrity is violated. Also, a new part is installed in case of contacts oxidation of the old one.
A road accident can be the cause of sensor breakdown. Also, the component stops operating properly due to ingress of moisture inside its body.
The on-board computer (if it is installed in the car) will indicate a corresponding error at breakage of the refrigerant pressure sensor. Moreover, quite often defectiveness is indicated by inability to turn on the air-conditioner at sufficient refrigerant amount. Unstable operation of the air-conditioner and its random turning-off are also possible.
Replacement of the refrigerant pressure sensor should be performed at a service station, as refrigerant removal from the system will be necessary before starting works. Special equipment – refrigerant recovery station - is used for this.
During installation of a new sensor you will need to replace the seal ring, treating it with air-conditioning system oil. Moreover, specialists will inspect its connector terminals before component installation. If necessary, the terminals will be treated with a special electrical contact cleaner spray.
How to select refrigerant pressure sensor
There are high and low pressure sensors, as well as combined ones. The first type device blocks system’s operation if pressure exceeds the maximum allowable value. The second type sensor performs turning-off of the compressor, if refrigerant pressure gets below the specified level. The combined sensor reacts to any deviation of refrigerant pressure from the norm.
If you want to purchase guaranteedly high-quality sensor, give preference to proven manufacturers. For example, parts of HELLA, FRIGAIR and AKS DASIS have good reputation among car owners.
Selection of the refrigerant pressure sensor should be performed with consideration of car specifications: the brand, model, production year, configuration; type and displacement of the engine. The parts differ one from another by quantity of connector contacts. Moreover, there are special parts for right-hand drive and left-hand drive cars.
