Information - Cabin air filter

When the time comes to replace the cabin filter, many car owners wonder, what is this item necessary for. First and foremost, its purpose is to clean the air that enters from the street from dust and other elements. If you do not change the cabin filter in the terms specified in the technical paper of the vehicle, you will not simply breathe dusty air, the bad filter does not protect from germs and bacteria. The cabin filter consists of a special material - breathable paper that lets air through and, at the same time, hinders small particles of dust and dirt. The filter design contributes to the fact that it does not clog, because air resistance is equal to almost zero. Modern filters can also be charcoal, which allows to hinder carbon dioxide.

The filter performance is not as complicated as you may think. It works almost like a vacuum cleaner - filters out dust and dirt, and issues clean air. Usually manufacturers specify when the time comes to change the cabin filter. Most European standards recommend doing it every 10-15 thousand kilometers of run. It is possible to identify yourself the improper filter performance: if the heater is blowing with difficulty or you notice steamed windows in your vehicle, you need to replace this element. As mentioned above, the dust inside the cabin is not the biggest problem caused by a damaged filter.

Every motorist should know that a clogged cabin filter may negatively affect car engine ventilation. It may have a serious impact on the health of both driver and passengers. After all, it is very dangerous to drive with a bad visibility because of steamed windows. You can order a cabin filter in our online store, along with air and fuel filters, and significantly save time and, what`s more important, money.

What is necessary to know about cabin filter replacement: lifetime limits, common defects and their signs, tips and recommendations

On average, lifetime limit of the cabin filter is 15 000 – 20 000 operational kilometers. Lifetime limit of the component depends on its type and conditions in which the car is used. For example, the filter will break down earlier from regular driving on mud roads.

Common defect of the component is lifetime end, in other words, clogging of the unit for mechanical cleaning of air or loss of absorbing capabilities of the charcoal cabin filter. Damage of the housing or filtering element is also possible.

Necessity of cabin filter replacement is indicated by decreasing of airflow through the car heater or air-conditioner, as well as uneffective operation of these devices. Moreover, mouldy smell is noticeable in the passenger compartment, humidity increases and glasses  sweat significantly.

Filter clogging can be diagnosed by visual inspection. Dark-gray colour of the component, appearance of dirt, dust, damages of the filtering element and deformation of the body indicate that the component is broken down.

In order to replace the cabin filter, you need to specify its location in the exact car model.  Usually this information can be taken from vehicle technical documentation. The component may be located behind the glove box, under the dashboard or under the bonnet. After gaining access to the filter, you need to remove its cover, unscrewing fasteners, and then remove the defective component. Install a new spare part as per the markings on its cover, close and fasten the filter cover.

Our customers ask

Where is cabin filter located and how to perform its replacement on your own?

In the most modern cars the cabin filter is mounted inside of the car behind the glove box or under it, and sometimes under the dashboard. In some cars the filter is located in the underbonnet space. In order to perform its replacement yourself you need to demount the filter cover by unbending fasteners, remove a defective filtering element, and install a new one to its place. But sometimes, in order to get access to the component, it is necessary to demount the glove box or disassemble the dashboard. More detailed information about how to replace the cabin filter of your very own car, you can find in vehicle technical documentation.

Which side is it necessary to install cabin filter?

In order to learn on which side you should install the cabin filter in your car, study the markings of the component body, and familiarize with technical documentation for the vehicle. Usually, direction of airflow and mounting side of the filtering element are marked on the side of the filter. If there are no markings on the filtering element, the component can be installed any side. The charcoal filter is installed so that a layer with activated charcoal is located on the air outlet of the filtering element.

When to replace cabin filter?

On average, the cabin filter should be replaced twice a year – in spring and in autumn. But if the vehicle is operated on dusty roads, in area with moist climate or in conditions of intense road traffic, necessity of new component installation can take place earlier. The fact that the cabin filter should be replaced in the car may be indicated by the next signs:

  • unpleasant odour inside of the car;
  • non-efficient operation of the cabin fan;
  • windows sweating.
