Information - Engine oil filter
The oil filter is a mechanism, designed to remove impurities from the lubricating and engine oil and hydraulic fluids. It is installed in the lubrication systems of all internal combustion engines. There are several types of oil filters: centrifugal, edge-type disc filters with replaceable cartridge, and others. The most common for the engine lubrication systems are the centrifugal filters. The oil filters can differ by form. The most common filter form is the mechanical filter: it uses filtering in order to remove impurities. Oil filters of this kind can be either reusable or expendable (throw-away filter).
These filters are designed to remove from the oil a large number of harmful particles that appear as a result of wear out of the rubbing surfaces of car parts. The oil filter is an integral mechanism consisting of a metallic body with a filtering element and special safety valves inside. In the filter there are two pistons mounted – a bypass piston and an anti-drain piston. The first one is activated when the obstruction of oil is due to its high viscosity, or by pollution of the filtering element. The second is installed at the filter input and is always open when the engine is running. If the engine stops, the valve closes and stores inside the filter a small quantity of oil, keeping it from getting drained back into the crankcase.
This gives the possibility to the oil to immediately enter the lubrication system the next time the engine is started. Another variation of the oil filter is a replaceable filtrating element, a cartridge that is installed in a stationary housing on the engine`s cylinder block. These valves are located directly in the engine.

What you need to know about oil filter replacement: lifetime limits, common defects and their signs, tips and recommendations
Engine oil filter is replaced together with motor oil. This procedure is performed every 10 000 – 15 000 operational kilometers according to the power plant type and quality of greasing material used.
The oil filter gets out of order due to soiling, damage of the housing or the filtering element and also due to anti-drain back valve elasticity loss. Need of early component replacement is indicated by engine work worsening, blackening of exhaust gases, oil pressure indicator actuation on the dashboard.
In order to replace the centrifugal oil filter or other oil filter you need to place the container for draining greasing material under the engine oil pan, unscrew the oil pan drain plug and remove it together with the gasket. After the oil has drained off, return the plug to the place. At the same time, you should replace the gasket. Then you should unscrew a defective filter, apply motor oil to the sealing ring of a new one, install the component and fix it. After finishing works you need to fill new oil, then start engine for a while, and after its turning off make sure there’s no leakage from under the filter gasket. If access to the filter is troubled, then you should address to a service station.
Where is oil filter located and how to perform its replacement?
- The oil filter is mounted in the underhood space, and, usually, closer to the lower engine part. Its exact location should be specified in car technical documentation. Also, during scheduled technical inspection you can ask specialists of a service station to show you where the oil filter is mounted, so as next time you will be able to replace it with your own hands. It is advisable to combine installation of a new part with oil replacement. For engines, operating on diesel fuel, this procedure should be performed every 7 000 – 10 000 kilometers; for gasoline engines – 10 000 – 15 000 km.
- Algorithm of replacement may vary according to the brand and model of the car, as well as construction of the filter itself. Firstly, you need to unscrew the threaded plug of the oil pan and drain oil into a tank, prepared in advance. It is necessary to replace the plug gasket during reverse installation. Unscrew and demount the filter with the help of a special wrench, install a new one to its place. If the body of the part is dismountable, you need to unscrew its cover and replace its filtering element only. After this, fill oil through the filler neck to a needed level. In some cases necessity of oil filter replacement without oil draining occurs. In this case, you may watch a video tutorial on the Internet to learn how to perform proper installation of a new part.
Which brand oil filter is better to install on the car?
In your car it is better to install the oil filters of the following firms:
- Knecht, Mahle, Mann-Filter, K&N and Stark Professional Line. These filters are the most demanded in the premium segment.
- Filtron, Bosch, Magneti Marelli, Ufi Filters, Vaico, Mapco and Valeo are considered the best in the mid-price segment.
- Blue Print, JP Group, Ashika, Champion, Meat&Doria, Ridex and Optimal. These are the most high-quality in the budget segment.
When is it necessary to replace oil filter?
Usually, the oil filters should be replaced during every scheduled oil replacement after 7 000 – 10 000 kilometers of mileage for diesel engines and 10 000 – 15 000 for petrol ones. But if poor-quality oil is used in the car or terms of scheduled oil refill are ignored, the oil filter loses operability earlier. Necessity of oil filter replacement can be suspected if there are oily stains in the underhood compartment and during engine start the indicator of oil pressure is continuously active on the dashboard.
