When and why it is necessary to replace the steering damper
Manufacturers do not specify lifetime limit of this component. The steering control shock absorber is to be replaced if dents or other defects appeared on its body, as well as at corrosion of the rod.
The cause for mechanical damage can be an impact during a road accident. And the device rod corrode because of moisture influence on it. Sometimes this happens because of dust boot defect.
Defectiveness of this component is indicated by strong steering wheel vibrations. Also knocking can be heard in the damper mounting area at turning of the steering wheel.
In most cases replacement of the steering control damper is a quite laborious process, presupposing usage of a lifting device. If you have no corresponding skills and equipment you’d better apply to a service station. New fastening elements can be installed at replacement of the damper.
