Steering damper: replacement and selection

When and why it is necessary to replace the steering damper

Manufacturers do not specify lifetime limit of this component. The steering control shock absorber is to be replaced if dents or other defects appeared on its body, as well as at corrosion of the rod.

The cause for mechanical damage can be an impact during a road accident. And the device rod corrode because of moisture influence on it. Sometimes this happens because of dust boot defect.

Defectiveness of this component is indicated by strong steering wheel vibrations. Also knocking can be heard in the damper mounting area at turning of the steering wheel.

In most cases replacement of the steering control damper is a quite laborious process, presupposing usage of a lifting device. If you have no corresponding skills and equipment you’d better apply to a service station. New fastening elements can be installed at replacement of the damper.

How to select steering damper

Apart from standard dampers, there are double and triple ones.

The standard steering control dampers are cheaper, but the double and triple are perfect for off-road driving, as they absorb undesired vibrations from the steering control better. Moreover, there are dampers with a return spring. Thanks to the parts of such construction, returning of the steering wheel into initial position gets quicker.

In order to make car exploitation more comfortable even in off-road conditions, purchase the steering damper of a proven brand. For instance, high-quality dampers are presented in the assortment of SACHS, SWAG, Febi Bilstein.

Select the steering damper in accordance with the model, brand, production year and body type of the car. No less important criterion during purchase is tensile force of the steering control damper. It should correspond to weight of the car. Thus, a damper, perfect for an off-roader with 2.5–3.0 tons weight will be unserviceable if your vehicle weight exceeds 3.0 tons. Also pay attention to length and diameter of the component, type and side of its mounting, travel of the rod.
