Accelerator pedal: replacement and selection

When and why accelerator pedal is replaced

Manufacturers do not specify certain replacement terms for this element. Necessity of buying a new component appears if the old one works incorrectly. Particularly, jamming of the pedal is the cause for replacement. Moreover, the component can break off.

In most cases a sensor defect causes the element breakdown. Also, the pedal can work incorrectly because of abrasion of the resistive layer on which its slider is moving. The cause of jamming is often the breakdown of one of return springs. Defect can also be the result of incorrectly performed component replacement. For example, this can happen if for installation of car pedal covers fastening elements were selected incorrectly.

A respective indicator on the dashboard signalizes about gas pedal defect if the car design has such a function. Moreover, in most cases at component breakdown (if it is electronic) unstable engine rpms are noticeable or even its periodical power loss. The car can also stop to react to pedal pressing. You can often notice component free movement and the fact that it doesn’t return to its place after pressing.

Take into account that in some cases you need  to demount the lower dashboard trim panel to replace the throttle pedal. When installing a new component it is recommended to apply silicone grease onto slide surface of the arm.

How to select an accelerator pedal

Pedals are made of various materials. Usually steel, aluminum, plastics are used. The accelerator pedals are divided into mechanical and electronic according to operating principle. If a component of the first type is used, it actuates a cable which opens the throttle valve. Pressing such a pedal the driver himself regulates the quantity of fuel which is supplied to cylinders.

If an electronic pedal is installed in the car, then effort of driver’s pressing is perceived by sensors. They send the received information to the control unit. According to these data the required angle of throttle valve opening is calculated. After that its actuator receives an appropriate command. Moreover, calculation result depends not only on information from the accelerator pedal, but also other data provided to the control unit: ignition point, volume of fuel injected, etc.
