Information - Clutch flywheel
The flywheel is a massive round item installed on the vehicle`s control shaft, assigned for the leveling of the vehicles progress. It looks very much like a wheel with a solid rim and is connected to the wheel hub by straight spokes or a solid disk. Often, the flywheel serves as clutch disk or pulley.
Weight and dimensions of the flywheel are determined by permissible deviations from the estimated rotation frequency and energy that he must return to the car at a certain moment. The energy accumulated by the flywheel is proportional to the item`s mass and the square of its rotation. Due to the fact that the velocity becomes greater, the greater the distance of the mass from the axis of rotation, the part is designed as a wheel with a solid rim. The prime mover transfers the energy to the vehicle. During low engine load a part of the energy is used, while the remaining is stored in the flywheel, which, in turn, accelerates to a speed exceeding the average. In the area of the cycle, requiring increased energy efficiency, the flywheel gradually slows down, giving the already accumulated kinetic energy. This allows using a less powerful drive.
There are several types of flywheels: massive flywheel, dual-mass flywheel and lightweight flywheel. When the engine is running at different speeds the crankshaft is subjected to torsional vibrations. The engine uses torsional vibration dampers. A flywheel with a special design is one of such items – the dual-mass flywheel. It has several advantages, and namely noise isolation, vibration damping, reducing of synchronizers wear out, ease of shifting, transmission protection against overload and, finally, fuel economy.
Lightweight flywheel is used when tuning the engine. If you redistribute the weight of the flywheel to the edges of the disc, you can reduce its weight to 1.5 kilograms and reduce the moment of inertia. With the lightweight flywheel the engine quickly reaches maximal speed, and increases the power up to 5%. In our online store you can buy a flywheel for your vehicle at a convenient price. We offer a wide range of goods: cylinder head bolts, damper strut bearings, fuel tanks and many other.
What you need to know about flywheel replacement: lifetime limits, common defects and their signs, tips and recommendations
Flywheel service life is not specified. Lifetime limit of the component depends on its type (one-mass and two-mass) and car operating conditions. Two-mass flywheels are worn out quicker as a rule. Component is to be replaced if toothed ring defects, wear out of friction surface, violation of integrity of the crankshaft flange housing, defects of screw thread are detected.
Foreign sounds during engine start indicate defects: screeching and rattling, etc. Another flywheel defect sign is unstable engine work at low rotation speed.
As a rule flywheel diagnostics is performed at a service station because it requires gearbox demounting which needs special equipment and professional skills. Examination allows to find the first wear-out signs: break or abrasion of the toothed ring, cracks, tearings, appearance of oxidizing colours. Condition of the two-mass flywheel can be assessed by checking free movement and displacement angle in both directions.
You should contact a service station for flywheel replacement. This procedure implies gearbox demounting and clutch dismantling. The flywheel is fixed with the help of a tool which is set into the toothed ring and then fastening bolts are unscrewed. Then the bearing disk and the flywheel itself is removed.
Installation of a new component is performed in reverse order. Bolts are screwed criss-cross in order to avoid element misalignment. In this case new fasteners are used, installation of old ones is prohibited.
It is recommended to replace the flywheel together with the clutch. You should also check the rear crankshaft oil seal during flywheel replacement. If there are oil stains on it, the component should be replaced.
