In 2020, the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union adopted a new regulation, (EU) 2020/740, that applies to all member states. It replaces Regulation (EC) No 1222/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council. It sets out revised tyre labelling and applies to all tyres manufactured or placed on the market in the EU from 1 May 2021. According to this regulation, tyre manufacturers must now provide information on snow grip and ice grip in addition to the fuel efficiency class, wet grip class, and external rolling noise class if the tyres are specifically designed for use in extreme snow and ice conditions. In addition, a QR code must be included in the tyre label. The EU tyre label generally applies to passenger car tyres, light commercial vehicle tyres, and heavy vehicle tyres (tyre classes C1, C2, and C3), with a few exceptions.

• FUEL EFFICIENCY

  The major factor is a rolling resistance coefficient that directly influences the car fuel consumption.

• WET GRIP

  Indicates braking efficiency on a wet road. Rated from A class (the shortest braking distance) to E class (the longest braking distance).

• EXTERIOR NOISE LEVEL

  A: at least 3 dB below the permissible value; B: at the EU permissible limit; C: exceeding the legal limit in the EU in force since 2016.

• SNOW GRIP

  Tyres that satisfy the minimum snow grip index values set out in UNECE Regulation No 117.
