Information - Auxiliary belt tensioner
All modern cars have seat belts with tensioners, which are designed to prevent movement of human relative to the driving movement in case of an accident. Belt tensioner is able to wind a segment of the belt up to 130 millimetres in 13 milliseconds. Often some people under the belt tensioner mean a retractor device for a seat belt. In most cases tensioners are installed in the seat belt buckle or on the belt retractor. There are several constructions, which differ according to the principles of action. Thus, there are rope, ball, rotor, rack and belt-type tensioners.
All the constructions differ with the drive that is either mechanical or electrical. In general, the tensioner work is provided within the system of the passive safety or independently. In the event of an accident, rear impact sensors transmit a signal to the control unit. After this the powder charge is activated, which activates the belt tensioners. To prevent a significant load on passengers in an accident, seat belt tensioner is equipped with force limiter, which slightly reduces the load pressure.
Belt tensioner effort is limited with a loop, which is on the seat belt. If a certain force of the tension is exceeded, the joints in the loop are broken and the belt is extended. Modern constructions of the belt tension effort are limited with a torsion bar in the ignition coil. Depending on the tension effort, the torsion bar twists and, thus, reduces the load. For the purpose of his own safety in case of breakage or wear of this car part, car owner must immediately replace the tensioner with a new one. Before you will drive to the car workshop, order the required part in our online store. Whatever spare part you need – centre silencer, bellowers set or a/c wiring, we offer the prices that are far lower than in other shops.
What you need to know about timing belt tensioner: lifetime limits, common defects and their signs, tips and recommendations
The timing belt tensioning mechanism should be replaced according to schedule together with the tensioner pulley every 80 000 – 120 000 operational kilometers. Mechanical damaging of the return spring of the device or its elasticity loss can lead to necessity of premature installation of a new element. The hydraulic tensioner of the belt can be jammed or broken due to leakage of working fluid. The main sign of mechanism defectiveness is unusual noise from the operating engine side.
Diagnostics of the timing belt tensioner bracket should be entrusted to car station specialists. They will demount the belt and define what exactly should be replaced: the toothed belt tensioner with the tensioning pulley or the whole timing belt kit. It is possible to diagnose tensioning mechanism breakdown on your own, by pressing the belt while the engine is shut down. If the part is operative then the belt will sag for more than 2-3 cm.
Installation of the timing belt tensioner is performed at a service station, as for this a few other parts that trouble access to the unit, should be demounted. Particularly, the belt and the alternator pulley will be replaced, and in some cases – other elements of auxiliary equipment, such as V-ribbed or poly V-belt tensioning arm of the alternator.
Improper installation of the timing belt tensioning device causes fast wear-out of the belt and increases risk of its tearing. In this case expensive repair of the engine may become necessary.
