Technical features of Audi vehicles

• The semi-automatic transmission S Tronic. The manufacturer implemented it since the beginning of the 2000s. Nowadays, it can be installed on A4 B9 saloons, A5 B9 5-door liftbacks, and other cars of the make. Shifting gears takes only a few hundredths of a second.

Design features

The saloon A8 D5, first unveiled at the Audi Summit in Barcelona in 2017, was the embodiment of the new design concept of the brand. A team led by Marc Lichte worked on the appearance of the novelty. The developers were driven by the company’s motto “Vorsprung durch Technik” (“Progress through Technology”) and aspired to achieve harmony between elegant design and practical functionality. They gave the car large wheel arches and hexagonal radiator “Singleframe” grille with chrome-coated bars. The rear lights, which use LEDs, stretch across the rear of the car from side to side. A touchscreen, integrated into the dashboard, replaced most of the traditional buttons and switches.

In 2017 at the International Motor Show Germany, the manufacturer presented the Elaine and Aicon electric concept cars that were built on the basis of the new A8. The former can be ridden without input from the driver on some segments of the route, while the latter is a truly autonomous car. There are no steering wheel and pedals in the spacious 4-seat cabin of the Aicon. Both cars feature a large glazing area and convex side windows and have no door handles. Hereby the manufacturer maintained the recognizable exterior features, placing a hexagonal element which resembles the traditional radiator grille on the front bumper.

Safety systems in Audi models

• Pre sense basic. It detects the onset of a potentially dangerous manoeuvre and gives a preliminary warning to other systems. When manoeuvring at a speed above 30 km/h it activates electric seat belt pretensioners. These prevent the driver and passengers of an Audi from assuming a position which increases the risk of injuries. The windows are closed automatically at high side acceleration, which reduces the probability of foreign objects entering the cabin. This technology is optionally fitted to the A1 GB 5-door hatchback, among others.
• Pre sense city. It recognizes other road users at speeds below 85 km/h. The assist system warns the driver in a dangerous situation and initiates emergency braking if necessary. Q5 FY crossovers are on the list of cars with factory-installed Pre sense city technology.
